Urban Enterprise Zone Program (UEZ) was created in 1983 to revitalize the state’s urban communities through the creation of private-sector jobs and public/private investment in targeted areas within these communities. Today, there are 32 UEZs in 37 municipalities. Carteret obtained UEZ Authority approval for inclusion in the UEZ Program January 11, 1995. Since the creation of the Carteret UEZ, numerous businesses have participated and taken advantage of the many UEZ program benefits. These companies have invested more than $536,083,394 million in their businesses. Now, there are more than 100 firms that actively employ more then 3,534 full time workers. UEZ qualified retail businesses may charge 50% of the mandated

7% NJ sales tax on certain “in person” purchases.

Revenues generated from the 3.5% sales tax are maintained in a Zone Assistance

Fund (ZAF) and are dedicated to use in the zone for certain Small Business Programs and

public service projects.

Pay no or reduced state sales tax on tangible personal property, material and equipment for your business. Tangible personal property includes items such as office supplies, office or business equipment, office and store furnishings, trade fixtures, cash registers, etc.

UEZ qualified businesses can receive a one-time corporation tax credit of $1,500 for each Carteret resident full-time hire that meets the program criteria, or a corporation tax credit of $500 for hiring a non-Carteret resident that meets the program criteria.
